September Book Review

Title: Spark of the Everflame

Author: Penn Cole

Genre: Fantasy

Tropes: Romantic fantasy, enemies to lovers, slow burn, female heroine, easy to follow world building, dystopian type vibe, forbidden love

Initial Thoughts: Dramatic cover, thinner book, cover gives queen energy

What I Liked: I liked that the love triangle reminded me of Gale and Peta from Hunger Games in a way. I think the story was as short as it needed to be, I think anymore and it would have drawn on. I liked the mystery that happened with the mother’s storyline. I loved the forbidden love!

What I Did Not Love: I feel like the romance took forever to start, then when it did was too rushed. There just wasn’t a smooth transition. I also didn’t like the similar backstory to Red Queen or Powerless with the city, I did like the change of pace that her family was somewhat favored however.

Fav Quote: “Don’t choose a mediocre life for a mediocre man. Go be exceptional. If he’s worth it, he won’t judge you. And if he’s really the one, he’ll come along for the ride.” AND “ “For anyone who has ever been told their spark shouldn’t burn so bright and for all the people who loved them precisely because it did.”

How did I Read: Ebook (it is on KU)

Is it a standalone or part of a series: It is the first book of a four-book series.

Overall Rating: 4.25/5

Final Thoughts: I really overall enjoyed it. I felt that the love story was a little bit of a nostalgic feel. I thought that the ending was a little abrupt for what all was all revealed. I think that it did make me feel better knowing there are two more books out now, but I do think that the love story could have been more than what it is. I think that the mother’s storyline could have been more as well. However, it was still exciting to read and I read it pretty quickly.
